Elemental uptake by plants is much affected by a number of factors. Most of these factors can be eliminated by using a ratio of a pair of elements that have a similar response to the various physical factors. This has been done by measuring the concentration of the element sought, e.g. copper and that of another element used as a control e.g. zinc and vice versa.
